Your first real job interview can be a terrifying experience. Interviewees stress themselves out over what to wear and especially what to say. My experiences with job interviews have taught me not too take them too seriously. My first job interview after graduating college was with an insurance agency for a position that I was not at all interested in. Some people would consider going a complete waste of time but knowing that I would never take the position allowed me to approach the job interview as a learning experience.
12_5
I used that first interview to get a better idea of what to say and hone in on what employers were looking for. I did go out and get myself a great job interview outfit and I went in there with all the confidence in the world. One way to communicate your confidence to the interviewer is to give them a good, strong handshake. Where I come from, handshakes are a tradition when meeting a new person. Look the employer in the eye and give them a firm hand. This is a quick and simple way to assert yourself as a confident and self-assured applicant.

Always bring a copy of your current resume with you to a job interview. Be open and honest about your work experience but do not feel like you must be modest. Show them that you are a rare find who has qualities they will not find in anyone else. I feel more comfortable when I can throw in a bit of humor into a job interview. Without being too casual or laid back, I like to ease myself into the interview and help give a more human feel to the experience.  http://www.careerberg.com

It is easy for a job interview to feel forced and unnatural and I find that a touch of humor can ease those feelings. I think that it is very important to be yourself in an interview. You would not want to have to keep up a fade once you have the job and you want the employer to know what kind of person they are really hiring.

Being yourself in a job interview will ensure that you end up in the right place and working at the right place makes all the difference in the world. The more natural and honest you are the better. I like to really put myself out there because I figure that it is important that they like me for who I am so that there is no confusion later as to what they can expect from me and what compromises I am likely to make.

Know Your True Self – Relationship Between Values And Goals

It is very important that you know yourself and what you want in life. Choosing what you want in life can only happen when you create a life based on your own particular design. This design reflects your own personal growth and the way you make them fall into different choices made by you in life, i.e. in relationships, career and jobs and so on.

Right Values, Right Goals
As mentioned, your first necessary step towards your personal growth should be to identify yourself and your likes and dislikes. You should clearly demarcate a line between your needs and wants in life. For your personal growth, it is very necessary that you strengthen your strong suits and talents, a gift which you can identify yourself best. Everyone wants to achieve the best in life, give a push to their career as well as personal life. This can only be realized when you strengthen your core abilities and achieve a higher personal growth in life.
300
You attitude towards life and society in general is based on some values. Your values automatically are reflected in the way you present yourself to others. This forms an important aspect of your personal growth. When you as an individual contribute more towards your society and community, inspire others through your learning and values, admire beauty and stay connected, you already achieve a different position for yourself, a position, which is unique, and a position that contributes to your emotional, mental and personal growth.

We always, as individuals, set some priorities and goals for ourselves. We lead our lives based on these priorities. However, it is very necessary that these goal oriented priorities do not off sync with our values and ideas. Try not to pursue goals for the sake of pursuing it. This stagnates your personal growth. Therefore, it is always better to write down your goals, which you yourself can identify with and match it up with your values that define your true self. By focusing yourself to a particular set of goals, you can really motivate yourself to achieve what you want in life. It allows you to stay focused, clear in life, and identify your true self in the pursuit of personal growth.

Experiment with Life:
Achieving your goals require commitment and a desire to work on those goals and spend time on them. Change can only take place when you are prepared to undertake certain risks and experiment with different aspects of life. This really shapes and contributes to one’s personal growth. Experimenting with one’s life is very important as it helps you in discovering many facets of life and simultaneously designs your life according to these experiences.

Remove the roadblocks that come on your way when you are designing your life according to your values and goals. Often people are unaware or unable in identifying and removing these blocks. They seek the help of a Personal Coach who helps them in exploring their opportunities, outside perspective and the possibilities of achieving their goal. They guide you through the necessary tools and structures that leave a profound and ever lasting impact on your life. In the long-term, you would reach the higher echelons of your personal growth.

Ten Ways to Build Your Personal Brand

Everything you do in life — from the way you dress to the car you buy, from the friends you see to the club you belong, from the notes you write to the way you speak — either builds or diminishes your personal brand. Below are ten suggestions for building a stronger personal brand.

One: Become an expert source. Deliver a speech, write a bylined article, and become an expert source for reporters. Make sure you have a current photo, bio, resume, and speaker introduction.

Two: Become a great communicator. Research shows communications skill is the top determinant for upward social and professional mobility. Join Toastmasters or hire a communications coach to ensure that your written and verbal skills are at their best.

Three: Draft a marketing plan for yourself annually, and review it quarterly. Include specific goals, strategies, action steps, and a timetable.

Four: Develop an ‘elevator speech.” Within the time that it takes an elevator to travel one floor — about 60-seconds — be able to deliver a succinct description of what you do, how you do it differently, and the benefit it provides.  http://www.virtual-base.com

Five: Build your Rolodex. Make new business contacts and stay in touch with them. Most people with powerful brands have powerful friends.

Six: Realize that your boss can be your most powerful ally — or enemy — in building your brand. Be loyal and never speak ill of him or her — to anyone. We should make our bosses look good, and help them build their own brands.

Seven: Dress for the job you want, not the job you have. Balance your individual style with clothing that will appeal to those you are trying to impress.

Eight: Become a class act. Learn good business and social etiquette. Buy elegant personal stationery and send hand-written notes. Know how to order a good bottle of wine in a fine restaurant and drink it sparingly during dinner. (Remember, alcohol and branding seldom mix.)

Nine: Select “significant” significant others. Who you date or who you marry affects your brand. John Hancock CEO David F. D’Alessandro in his book Career Warfare: 10 Rules for Building a Successful Personal Brand and Fighting to Keep It, suggests that single people not take their dates to company events. If they do, they will be judged by the outcome of every romance.

Ten: Give something back. Giving your time, talent, and money to charitable causes is a brand-builder especially when it complements your brand strategy. Find a cause you are passionate about. When I was in public relations, I wanted to be known for my creativity. By limiting my community involvement to arts organizations I was able to reinforce my personal brand. Not only did my involvement in the arts benefit my career, I enjoyed the work. I still do. http://www.careerberg.com

Your personal brand is one of your greatest business assets. Nurture your brand and you will nurture your career.

Choosing the Right Career for the Ideal Job

Many people go into careers and jobs without thinking if this is suited for me or 5 to 10 years later they realize this is not what I expected.

Many individuals spend months or even years not happy with their careers. Some may take any available job while others may follow in their parent’s footsteps. This may work out for some but many others never discover their true career skills and are dissatisfied with their jobs.

Careful career planning is essential in fulfilling one’s job search that will give years of work enjoyment and satisfaction. If you are going to work it might as well be something you like to do and skilled at doing. Knowing what your skills are and what you are good at is the starting point in choosing the right career. You will unlikely be completely satisfied in your career unless you use the skills you enjoy and are good at.

963

Ask yourself some questions such as: What interests do I have? What sorts of people would I like to work with?

Don’t confuse an ideal job with a job title. You might enjoy working in one place and hate working in another. Both could have the same job title but be entirely different jobs.

Let’s say you were looking for a job as a sales person or a teacher, these would be job titles. The ideal job within the salesperson category could be in retail sales, real estate, manufacturing sales representatives, car sales, etc. A teacher might teach kindergarten, elementary, middle, or high school students. Or a teacher might teach adults or special need individuals how to read and write. So don’t choose a job just by its title but by the different job areas under the title that fits your interests and skills. People are more likely to stay in a career and be successful if it suits their interest and skills.  http://www.careerberg.com

It would be wise to spend extra time thinking about what type of work you want to do. Some key factors to consider when planning a career is your skills, interests, earnings, location, work environment, kinds of people you like to work with, etc.

You may have to go back to school for more education, but don’t let that hold you back from that ideal job. Education and earnings go hand in hand. The more education you have the more money you are capable of earning. Although earnings are important, liking your work is equally important.

Having a college degree is definitely a plus in career planning, but many trade, technical and other schools offer similar opportunities to individuals without a college degree.

A well trained electrician, plumber, police officer, auto mechanic, computer repair technician, tool and die maker among many others can do very well in today’s economy. There are many jobs that only require one or two years of training. Many companies and organizations have on the job training while paying your salary. People in sales, small business, self employment and other job areas do quite well without a college degree, although for better positions more education is often required.

Your career will most likely change over the course of your life no matter how much career planning you do. That makes it important for you to recognize what you are good at and develop those skills throughout your life. As your interests change you may want to develop new skills.

Good career planning is very important, but it should be done in the context of what you want to do with your life.

Market Yourself with a Resume That Gets Results

Your resume should be like any good marketing plan — designed to sell! It needs to hook potential employers as soon as they see it, so they bypass the discard pile and take a second look. Creating a resume that accomplishes that can’t be done in just a few minutes because there’s much more to it than listing your work history and year of graduation. Try thinking of it as an art form, because it is. Great resumes get a second look and an interview, but bad ones don’t get a second thought.

If you’re serious about scoring as many interviews as you can and for the jobs you really want, then learning how to market yourself with a resume that grabs attention should be one of your top priorities. This is the only way you’ll stand out from the crowd.

c-320wi
Know the Market
Advertising companies do market research before they put together an ad campaign. Why? Because they need to know who they’re selling to and what those people want. The same strategy should apply to your job search. You have to know what jobs are available to know how to market yourself to them. Scour the job boards and classifieds to see what’s out there, and know what kind of job you’re looking for — finding a job can be pretty tough if you have no goals or ideas about what you want to do.

Target Your Resume
Determine which jobs you’re interested in and target your resume to each one. Don’t submit the same version of it for every job you apply for — change words and move things around so your resume uses some of the same lingo as the job descriptions. Use keywords to highlight your experience and accomplishments that best match those sought for each job. Your goal should be to match the content of your resume as much as possible to the qualifications and duties described in each job notice.

Make It Stand Out
A visually appealing and easy-to-read resume gets attention. Skip the fancy fonts, long paragraphs, and flowered stationary. Use as few words as possible and make creative use of white space, bold letters, sectioning, and bullets. A potential employer should be able to scan over your resume quickly to determine if it deserves a longer look. You want them to notice what’s great about your resume, not the color of the paper.

Shift your Priorities
For each job you apply to, shift items around on your resume so that the first thing any potential employer sees is exactly what they’re looking for. If they’re specifically looking for someone who speaks Swahili, put it at or near the beginning of your resume (as long as you actually speak it, of course!) It’s a simple strategy — the things they want go first, the things that are less appealing or less important to the job go last.

Highlight what is Important
Yes, you are multi-talented and of course, your resume needs to sum up your skills and abilities. However, you don’t need to list everything. You just need to let them know what skills you have that are assets for the job.

As far as your education goes, unless you’re right out of school, your degree doesn’t need to be the first thing people see on your resume. If you’ve been working for five years or more, list your education last and focus on your skills and accomplishments. However, if you’re just starting out, it’s perfectly acceptable to list your degrees, as well as your GPA, courses relevant to your job search, and any awards or scholarships you’ve earned.

Any special training you’ve completed should be included, so long as it’s pertinent to the job at hand (so skip the blurb about Clown School if you’re applying for an accounting job).

Share Your Story

Job history is important, but to highlight your experience that best relates to the job, a chronological rundown may not always be the best approach. You may want to consider emphasizing what you know instead of what you’ve done, although in most cases, a job timeline is more than adequate.

Accomplishments you’ve made on the job could be included in your job history, or they could be highlighted separately on your resume, along with off-the-job accomplishments and any special skills you can bring to the table. Decide how you want to emphasize these aspects of yourself so employers will notice what’s most important to them. http://www.careerberg.com

Perfecting your resume can be tough, but it really does help to think of it as a marketing tool. Know your audience and tailor your resume to them each time. If you don’t, you may not appeal to the people who are reading it. With a little time and patience — and perhaps a little extra advice — you can put together a resume that’s sure to get you in the door for an interview. The rest is up to you!

Confident Body Language: Research Shows It’s The Key!

Posted by admin | Posted in Going One Step Ahead, Personal & Self-Marketing, Self Improvement | Posted on 13-08-2010-05-2008

It’s easy to assume that our feelings determine our behavior, and not the other way around. For example, most of us assume that if a person “acts” very confident it is because that person “feels” very confident. But there’s plenty of new research to prove that it also works the other way around. Many studies have shown that adopting confident body language can actually make you feel more confident!

Another great example of this mind-body connection is a study that showed holding a pencil between your teeth for 15-20 minutes (forcing you to smile) actually makes people feel happier. This is significant because it strongly suggests that changing what you do with your physical body will actually change your emotions too. The implications of this are huge, especially in the area of personal development.
2_02
A Confident Posture
Just as “forcing” yourself to smile can actually make you feel happier, forcing yourself to adopt more confident body language can actually make you feel more confident. Keeping that is mind, here’s a quick list of behaviors that you can use to build feelings of confidence: http://www.careerberg.com

1. Stand up straight. This may be an old cliché, but it’s probably the number one behavior associated with confidence. Straighten out the back and push the chest out (within reason of course). Show your full height, no matter what it is and you will appear and feel more confident and powerful.

2. Chin Up! Rise your head, elongate the neck slightly and keep that chin up in the air-don’t worry, you won’t appear arrogant, you’ll appear centered and secure.

3. Smile. As we’ve already mentioned, making yourself smile (regardless of how you feel) actually changes the way you feel. Also, smiling shows confidence and an easy-going manner. If you’re someone who finds it difficult to smile, try the “holding a pencil between your teeth” technique. Do this for about 15 minutes twice a day and you WILL notice a difference in how you feel. You will also be building a new habit of smiling easily, which just broadcasts confidence.

4. Open your eyes! Opening the eyes a little wider than normal expresses openness and a strong social connection. Again, “faking” this behavior can cause you to feel these attributes, so go ahead and “fake it ’til you make it.”

5. Slow it down a bit. Slowing down your motions a little expresses confidence and a peaceful nature. Confident people rarely stress or rush. Moving in a slow, methodical manner tells others (and your subconscious) that you are confident.

You are in complete control of your posture, and by changing your posture you also take control over the way you feel. If you don’t feel like standing up straight (or any of the others), just fake it! Don’t wait to change your behavior after you feel better, change your behavior NOW and more confident feelings will naturally follow.

Tips to Help Balance Career and Family

Whether you are male or female, a mom or a dad, balancing career and family can be really difficult. When you’re a woman, though, the choices you have to make seem especially difficult and the responsibilities all the more great. For some reason, women are guilt-ridden with their career decisions and the choices they make about working while trying to raise their children, providing nutritious meals for their family, keeping a respectable house and keeping their husbands happy. Last on the list, of course, is finding some time for themselves. So how does a woman find time to actually feel happy with her daily activities while keeping up with all of the responsibility?

62402

First, take time to smell the roses! Literally, you can take time to smell the roses but you can actually do this with no flowers in sight. Every day, try to look around and appreciate what you have, taking in the sounds of your child’s laughter, the wag of your dog’s tail, the special glance of your husband as you tell a funny joke. Sometimes, the knowledge of what you have on your plate for the day will feel overwhelming, but a little perspective goes a long way. It may be a cliché and a very tired phrase, but it truly does work. People tend to get lost in the mundane, day-to-day “functioning” instead of really living their lives. For example, next time you are worried about fitting in your exercise with your child’s play date at Little Gym, forego the Little Gym and head out with your son or daughter for a run.http://www.careerberg.com

Strap the little one in the jog stroller or if he or she is old enough, ask them to put on the running shoes with Mommy and head outside! Once outside, you can literally stop to smell the roses. Just a few minutes of gratitude a day will work wonders for your soul and automatically make your life feel more balanced.

Along these same lines, try and give yourself some “me” time once a week. Once a week may not seem like much, but if you really allow yourself to soak it in and enjoy the time spent, it will make the stress of all of the rest of the hectic days melt away. Take a good block of time on a Saturday or Sunday – 2 hours, maybe – and mark this time in your calendar in pen, not pencil. Keep a standing appointment with yourself, and honor it as you would any other. Think you are too busy on a weekend to do this? You will feel much more productive the rest of the weekend allowing yourself this little ‘refresher’, rather than trying to cram some time in on a random Tuesday or other weeknight. For this special time, you can book a massage or a facial at your favorite spa. Take a couple of hours to go window shopping at your favorites stores, by yourself or with a friend. Take in a matinee with a couple of girlfriends. If your husband is willing to fly solo on a Saturday night, you can even book a girls’ night out once in a while and truly let loose! Even if your budget doesn’t allow for these activities once a week, you can lock yourself in the bathroom with a good book, a bubble bath and a nice glass of wine and feel good about your time alone – you deserve some!

Probably the most obvious way to balance career and family is to incorporate your family into what would otherwise be “work time”. If you have a short commute to work, for example, perhaps you can drive your kids to school each morning instead of having them take the bus. In the alternative, you could have your morning cup of coffee at the bus stop with them and spend a few minutes chatting about their day and what they plan to learn in school as you sip your cup of Joe and breathe in the morning air to mentally prepare for your own day ahead. If you normally exercise in the morning and leave the house very early, switch your workout time to lunch and leave the office to go to the gym, eating at your desk when you get back. You will have more time with your family each day and get a healthy break from your pile of papers to boot.

You may need to get a little creative with your schedule, but there are definitely ways to help balance career and family. Sometimes an extra few minutes each day or a once-weekly good block of time can go a long way in helping restore your peace of mind and help you feel less harried.

Communication Skills for Managers

Posted by admin | Posted in Self Improvement | Posted on 04-08-2010-05-2008

0

Performance appraisal is probably the most misused and abused management tool in history. When asked, the majority of human resource managers will swear blind that it is their most important device for reviewing members of the team. The reality is that, on the whole, managers, supervisors, and employees hate the thoughts of them and they rarely get done. Human resource professionals spend a lot of time whipping people into doing them, while managers look for a variety of reasons to delay the process.

The reason for this is that it’s often an uncomfortable practice to carry out, people undertake performance appraisal for the wrong reasons and from the wrong perspective. This can end up putting the manager and the employee on different “sides”. Appraisals are used for determining pay increases, who gets let go, who gets promoted. Most commonly, they are used to focus on what people have done wrong.
communication skills
So what is the real point of performance appraisals? Generally, the aim of the practice is to:

• Give feedback on performance to employees.
• Identify employee training needs.
• Document criteria used to allocate organizational rewards.
• Form a basis for personnel decisions: salary increases, promotions, disciplinary actions, etc.
• Provide the opportunity for organizational diagnosis and development.
• Facilitate communication between employee and administrator.
• Validate selection techniques and human resource policies to meet federal Equal Employment

Opportunity requirements

The most important purpose or goal of the appraisal is to improve performance in the future, in both employees and team leaders. Managers can get valuable information from staff to help them make their jobs more productive. Through feedback given in performance appraisals work units can identify problems that interfere with everyone’s, and take steps to rectify them. If there is a shift from affixing blame to identifying barriers to performance the fear and dread associated with appraisals will be removed.

http://www.careerberg.com

When managers put away the “blaming stick” in appraisals and move to a cooperative, dialogue approach, the whole process can become more comfortable and effective. Because, it puts the manager and employee on the same side, and working towards the same goals, getting better and better.

Performance appraisals are always awkward for everyone. While managers make an effort to be as objective as possible, there are always concerns about specific performance appraisals, and their accuracy. When you’re evaluating your staff it’s wise to be aware of factors that may affect your assessments. Here are a few factors you should be aware of, so that you can examine your own assessment processes to ensure that they are as free from bias as possible.

Generalizing

Generalizing, or the halo effect, is the tendency to rate someone high or low in all categories, based on their performance in other areas. Results of performance appraisals, where generalizing occurs, do not help develop employees because they are inaccurate and unspecific to their entire performance.

Different Standards of Evaluation

Evaluation terms such as fair, good, excellent, etc, are commonly used in performance appraisals, yet managers should be aware that the meaning of these words will differ from person to person. In any case, the use of these categories is not recommended; they are just too unspecific and do little to provide sufficient information to evaluate individuals and help them develop.

Current and Lenient Bias

Current bias is the tendency to assess people based on their most recent performance and to ignore previous behavior. Leniency bias occurs when the employee gets rated higher than warranted; this is usually accompanied by rationalization as to why this is appropriate.

Opportunity Bias

This occurs as a result of ignoring the notion that factors beyond the control of the employee may either restrict or facilitate their performance. In the case of opportunity bias, credit or blame is given to the employee when the true cause of the performance was opportunity.

False Attribution Errors

There is often a tendency, in performance appraisal, to attribute success or failure to individual effort and ability. So when someone does well, we give them credit, and when someone does less well, we suggest it’s somehow their fault. While there is some truth in this, the reality is that performance is a function of both the individual and the system he or she works in. If both factors are not taken into account, it will be increasingly difficult to improve on performance.

http://www.careerberg.com
Although performance appraisals are commonly dreaded throughout the company, from team leader to employee, they are a necessary tool in ensuring development. If conducted fairly and appropriately the information gathered can be used to vastly improve the performance of the entire team.

True passion is one of the most powerful feelings one may feel in their lifetime. One can become so passionate about something that they feel they would die for it (and sometimes do.) It may be one of the most powerful of all human emotions. Passion can be harnessed for good, or for evil. It is when people harness their passions in positive ways that the world is shaped in a beautiful way.

These people are not lazy, unambitious, unmotivated, depressed bags of flesh that mope about all day wallowing in self-pity. They are alive, energetic, proactive and dynamic beings who have come to fully realize the divine potential within their own mind, body, life and soul.
